Horse Buying and Aftercare – A Hands on Workshop, Saturday 18th May

Finding the right horse is a minefield. From hidden histories, stable vices, health problems and horses not being as described, finding a partnership with the perfect horse isn’t simple. Join expert Carolyn Wise, on this informative and hands on workshop at her private yard near Cranleigh, Surrey. Absorb vital facts easier, in an outdoor and practical learning environment. With over 30 years of knowledge and the creation of hundreds of successful partnerships with horse and rider in her career, Carolyn is passionate about sharing her experience in the industry, to help you fulfil your equine ambitions and dreams. 

Part One 10-11.15am:

Finding a horse

  1. Resources for finding horses
  2. Budget
  3. Evaluating and understanding your needs as a rider
  4. Horse wish list (breed, size, weight, age, gender, history, temperament, skills, experience etc.)
  5. What are you willing to compromise on?
  6. Guidelines of viewing, evaluating and purchasing a new horse
  7. Checking for soundness and vices
  8. Tips on closing the deal, price negotiation
  9. Standard practice for vettings and payment


Break Tea, coffee & snacks 11.15-11.30am


Part Two 11.30am-12.30pm

Settling in a horse to its new home

  1. Stable care, routine and turnout
  2. Feeding and health
  3. Choosing and fitting tack and rugs correctly, supplier recommendations
  4. Exercise, when to lunge/ride etc
  5. Bonding with your new horse, building trust and a positive new relationship


Please arrive no later than 9.45am for a 10am start. Finish will be approx. 12.30pm. Please bring your own pen and notebook.
